    Fascinating Facts

“Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence.” -John Adams
“Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts.” -Daniel Moynihan
4 Fascinating Facts About The Tongue

James 3:1-2 NLT Dear brothers and sisters, not many of you should become teachers in the church, for we who teach will be judged more strictly. 2 - Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.

    1) The Tongue Is Disproportionately Powerful

James 3:3 NIV When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal.

James 1:26 NKJV If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless.

James 3:4 NIV Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.

James 3:5 NIV Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark

    2) The Tongue Is Inherently Evil

James 3:6 & 8(B) NIV The tongue is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. 8(B) - …It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

    3) The Tongue Is Humanly Untamable

James 3:7-8(A) For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. 8(A) - But no man can tame the tongue…

Acts 2:3 NHEB Tongues like fire appeared and were distributed to them, and one sat on each of them.

James 3:6 GNT And the tongue is like a fire. It is a world of wrong, occupying its place in our bodies and spreading evil through our whole being. It sets on fire the entire course of our existence with the fire that comes to it from hell itself.

    4) The Tongue Is Contrastingly Productive

James 3:9-12 NIV With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 - Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11 - Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12 - My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

Matthew 12:33 NKJV Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit.

James 3:8-12 The Message By our speech we can ruin the world, turn harmony to chaos, throw mud on a reputation, send the whole world up in smoke and go up in smoke with it, smoke right from the pit of hell.

This is scary: You can tame a tiger, but you can’t tame a tongue—it’s never been done. The tongue runs wild, a wanton killer.

With our tongues we bless God our Father; with the same tongues we curse the very men and women he made in his image. Curses and blessings out of the same mouth!

My friends, this can’t go on. A spring doesn’t gush fresh water one day and brackish the next, does it? Apple trees don’t bear strawberries, do they? Raspberry bushes don’t bear apples, do they?

You’re not going to dip into a polluted mud hole and get a cup of clear, cool water, are you?

Luke 6:45 ESV The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

    3) Pray

Isaiah 6:1-8 NKJV In the year thatKing Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. 2 - Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 - And one cried to another and said:

6 - Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a live coal which he had taken with the tongs from the altar. 7 - And he touched my mouth with it, and said:

“Behold, this has touched your lips; your iniquity is taken away, and your sinpurged.”

8 - Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying:

“Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?”

    Then I said;

    “Here am I! Send me.”
