Shane Finan - Wood Wide Web

  1. Shane Finan, resident artist on the programme ENTWINED. Rural. Land. Lives. Art. will be posting video essays in the coming weeks about his residency with VARC.

The introductory video essay by Shane Finan on the video essay and documentary project, 'Never Just A Tree', as part of his residency 'The Wood Wide Web' in collaboration with the Kielderhead Wildwood Project, Kielder. Follow-on videos will appear on this Vimeo page in the coming weeks.

In this video, Shane introduces the concepts that he will be working on. His work crosses ideas about natural, technological and social concepts. On his residency, he will be creating work about networks, in the forest, in communities, and through digital technologies.

The 'Wood Wide Web' is a recently discovered phenomenon about networks of fungi and trees that spread through forests, sharing and exchanging information, food, water and other resources. Community networks help enrich people's lives, often through art. Digital technologies enable international communication and can broaden networks. Each concept will be explored in more detail in the videos released in the coming weeks.

This residency is part of the programme ENTWINED. Rural. Land. Lives. Art. Shane is resident artist at the Kielderhead Wildwood Project. His residency was planned to take place in April 2020 but has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the interim, Shane is creating a series of concept videos about his project plans, that will include responses to the pandemic.

'Necessity 1: Forests' is the fifth video in the series 'Never Just A Tree', as part of the residency 'The Wood Wide Web' in collaboration with the Kielderhead Wildwood Project, Kielder. The 5th-7th videos in this series talk about the necessity of different types of network: why do they matter?

Artist Shane Finan's video essays for his project, "The Wood Wide Web".

"The Wood Wide Web" is a discovery in forestry that shows how trees communicate with one another. Finan has developed a series of video essays that overlap this concept with his own past work on communities of people and on online communities. His videos explore in detail these three types of networks: Forest, community, technology.

Finan is Artist in Residence at the Kielderhead Wildwood Project (2020) with VARC.
