I was standing in the Douma Center, a crowded UNHCR (United Nation’s High Commission for Refugees) aid distribution warehouse a few miles outside of Damascus, Syria.
Most of the hundreds of people milling around, or squished together on rows of blue plastic chairs, have been here all day.

It was the early morning of Eid al-Adha in Van, a Kurdish city in Turkey’s southeastern badlands. Eid al-Adha, which is observed throughout the Muslim world, translates from Arabic to the “Festival of Sacrifice” and marks Abraham’s decision to sacrifice his son Isaac (or in Islam, Ishmael) at God’s request. Its also one of the most polluted rivers in the world absorbing over 200 million gallons of sewage from the city each day.
