Alex Orlowski began directing through Music Videos in Italy. His own musical background, producing records for himself and other artists blended with his love of cinema and he got the chance to direct his first promo for legendary U.S. Rappers Afrika Bambataa.
In 1997 he moved to London and set up a production company for music videos and also began directing commercials.
Alex’s first music video in London for independent underground label Mo’ Wax was featured in industry magazine Promo as “promo of the month”. Alex directed “Pleasant Smell” for cult band 12 Rounds, a British band signed to Trent Reznors Nothing Records in the U.S.
Alex’s music video for Sony artist DJ Rap is a surreal visualisation of a world where people seem to be monsters and the heroine (Rap) finds herself alienated and pursued by beings that are very different to herself. The video is at the same time both dark and humorous. Alex used a lot of post production effects which he wanted to keep as organic looking as possible so as not to damage the B-movie vibe that he was after. The video for “Everyday Girl” was chosen to be amongst the finalists for best alternative video at the CADS 2000.
He has worked on numerous advertising campaigns over the years, more recently having shot work for Seat, Peugot, Vodafone, Telecom Italia and Konica Minolta working with Valentino Rossi and Ronaldinho. Alex loves to use post production in an organic way. His favorite work usually mixes classic camera and film styles with post production techniques lending a distinctive "movie" feel to his work, be it a b - movie, documentary, gangster flick or something more sophisticated it's inherent to most of his films.
His short film “Peace At Last” that premiered at the Mannheim/Heidelberg film festival in Germany. The Soundtrack for which features music by Bjork and alternative Italian musicians CSI and recently finished a short film “Juegala Bien” about a Brazilian who ends up in a football riot as he celebrates a Barca FC and Ronaldinho victory after a UEFA champions league final.
The film has been picked up by Barcelona City Council as part of a series of films they are showing dealing with immigration as well as being shown at the Quick Flick International short film festivals worldwide. qfworld.tv/
