(Summary) (Ken) Father kept 80-90 pigs, 150 chickens & goats during WW2 - goat’s milk to London every day - good for certain injuries too; in 1930s & 40s - load the pigs in a pony and trap - made butter from goats at home - 1935/6 Ken and father walked a sow to the market, and near football ground she sat and wouldn’t move - (Daisy) caught the bus to market - brought the pigs back if not sold - Daisy looked around the pigs and tell her husband who’d come at lunchtime, and she’d bid on them - few ladies at the pig market - ‘pretty red dress’; (Ken) auction style - a nod or a wink - description of the old market - very basic - then in 1950s built the new market; in 1948 they had car auctions, bought an Austin 7 from 1929 for £68 (it was £98 new); grew plants for the trade - I worked at post office and called different places to get the orders - put a note with pigeons to send a message to Daisy - didn’t have a telephone then - in later years we got a telephone (Daisy) I had a rough idea when the pigeons would come - I took off the note - they were happy - it worked well.

Chewing the Cud: Memories from Hereford's Old Livestock Market was a Catcher Media project. Hereford’s old livestock market was the stimulus for this exciting heritage project which brought people together from all over the county to share memories, gain skills, make a film and create a children’s exhibition which celebrates Herefordshire’s shared agricultural history.

Supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, with additional help from Herefordshire Council’s Museum Service, Cargill Community Partnership and the NFUM Community Giving Fund, and assistance from Hereford Market Auctioneers, Herefordshire Council’s Archive Service, Hereford Cattle Society and Herefordshire Lore.

Chewing the Cud was made with the help of trainees who were developing their film-making and oral history interviewing skills on the project. They helped to devise the script, direct and edit the final film.
