1. This video is of another student who had missed half of year because of an illness. When she came back she was still very lathargic and appeared to be sleeping three quarters of the time in class. This is one of her first attempts at using the communication book on an electronic system. This was in June of the first year. Since it is one of her first times she does not have it customized so you will notice that the therapist gets her Light Tech Book so she can tell us what is going on as she clearly trying to be persistent in telling us her message.

  3. In this video segment one of the students is using the ECO Point system ( from PRC) on trial. She is using her eyes to carry on a simple phone conversation. When she looks at the item on the screen, it activates that item. You can see it working in the video, as when it lights up and speaks she is looking at the item. She was introduced to the phone conversation the day before. This her second day seeing and using the conversation. She was able to transfer the skills she had in the greeting conversation to the phone conversation. The persistent use of her light tech communication book and the many lessons centered around conversations helped Nika to immediately transfer those skills to a high tech communication system. Videotaping of trials and lessons is key to showing others what students can do. Often students who have access issues and communication issues can rarely perform under pressure or for an audience of unfamiliar people. Videotaping within these activities shows what students are capable of without the pressure and excitement that is often present when the team is coming to evaluate.

  4. In this segment Rachel, the teacher is modeling how to use the book to have a hello conversation. This is within the first weeks of school. Scripting was used to teach Rachel how to teach the children and communication partners how to use the books. Scripting is detailed instructions on what to do say do and how to respond to students while they are using the learning materials and communication books
