Latrun

General History
The Battle of Latrun was one of the legendary and fiercest battles in Israel’s War for Independence (1948). Important military leaders, including future prime ministers Yitzhak Rabin and Ariel Sharon fought here, Sharon was seriously wounded.

Latrun is strategically located on the high ground overlooking the main highway from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv, ten miles west of Jerusalem, about a mile from Emmaus (Luke 24:13–35). It is about 15 minutes from Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv.

• From the time of the conquest of Joshua, this has been the scene of numerous battles. It is located in the Ayalon Valley where Joshua prayed for God to make the sun stand still so he could have time to complete the defeat of the Amorites (Josh. 10:12–13).
• Latrun hill has the ruins of an Arab village and a 12th century crusader fortress.
• In 1890, a French Trappist monastery was built there.
• During the time of the British mandate, the British had a police fortress there, overlooking the crossroads. When the Brits departed on May 14, 1948, the Jordanian Arab Legion quickly gained control, blocking the flow of aid to the Jewish residents trapped in the Old City who were slowly starving to death.
• The Haganah launched three major assaults, all unsuccessful and with heavy losses.
• To circumvent the stronghold, the Israelis, led by Col. David Marcus, a U.S. graduate of West Point and WW2 veteran, built an alternate, secret road on the bed of an ancient Roman highway and were finally able to deliver aid to those trapped in the Old City.
• Latrun did not come into Israeli possession until the 1967 war. Because of its strategic location, the consensus is that it will not be given up to PA control.
• Today a museum to the IDF and an extensive armored museum is at Latrun.
