  2. Haiti still lies in ruins from the earthquake that rocked the small country in January 2010. The city of Port au Prince still appears to be falling down around its residents.

Gedeon and Leo are members of the Special Olympics soccer team in Haiti and are preparing to compete in the 2011 World Games in Athens. Both were deeply affected by the earthquake and struggled to overcome their losses in a society where intellectually disabled children are discarded.

By playing soccer both in Special Olympics and at their school, the children are able to prove to their community and themselves that they are capable of more.

Shot and produced by Shannon Sanders and Megan Garner with two Panasonic HMC 150s, a Canon 5D Mark II, Sennheiser shotgun and wireless lavalier microphones. This video was produced for Special Olympics and can be found on their site as well.

  3. Carlos is a Special Olympics athlete and captain of the soccer team for Special Olympics Ecuador. He has an intellectual disability that makes some parts of his life difficult. But through Special Olympics he has been able to find a job, support his family, play soccer and develop lasting relationships with his teammates.

Carlos and his teammates will be competing in the summer 2011 Special Olympics World Games in Athens, Greece, where they hope to win a gold medal for Ecuador and to connect with athletes from all over the world.

Brian Schlansky and I produced a 4-minute piece and a 1-minute piece for Special Olympics to use before the World Games. This is the 4-minute version.

Shot by Megan Garner with a Panasonic HMC150, a Sennheiser shotgun mic and a Sennheiser lav. Produced by Megan Garner and Brian Schlansky.
