THE GILDED CHILD

1. Short description of the film (100 words or less):
We are surrounded by (moving) images. Pictures have become icons. They tell a story which often have symbolic connotations (which we can no longer read anymore). They are profound and are stuck in our collective memory. An associative stream of consciousness assembled with specific footage that we have found online. The combination of history, humor and magic. -Reflection about (ancient) power structures. And we, who are in search for meaning and content. We want an identity; An inner search for some sort of salvation / ‘true’ content in life.

2. Full synopsis (200 words or less):
The Gilded Child is a mix piece of video art with a wide set of interpretations. It refers to the human search for salvation and content (The Gilded Child -> The Golden Child -> The Chosen One). It’s also about the search for universal understanding: we as a species become gilded, devine.
The Gilded Child also tell the abstract story of meritocraty: the perfect individual, fighting and searching in order to grow, trying to transcend him/herself (in a democratic neo-liberal
Machiavellian way). So this video is also a critique on global contemporary civilisation. We are manipulated by people with power and we can not understand the bigger picture. Nations rise and fall by the goodwill of a group of powerfull leaders. We are desacralized. We create jungles of concrete while we miss our lost connection with the magical aspects of life. We are surrounded with symbols of the past, but we can no longer read them. We are illiterate in the real world and spiritual connected to a virtual.

3. Artists Intention:
- We want to use magic.
- We want to create a unique universe, a temporary reality that guides the audience through the darkness of the video screen. - We want to explore storytelling. - We play with original use of subtitles.
- We believe in the importance of intermediality: The use of ‘random’ found footage, the tension between moving images and stills, the possibility of an error / glitch / freeze frame, the variety within the continuous stream of evolving digital data, ... - We want to play with tools of suspense.
- We want to trigger the collective memory, to reshape it and create new critical
content. We want to play with the emotional attachement of the audience. - We want to open up the number of possible interpretations in the minds of the audience.

Video & installation Art Duo, based in Ghent (BE).
Long term ‘Artist in Residence’ @ International Theater Production Center CAMPO, Ghent (BE).
Members of the Board of Directors, PORT ACTIF: 'Intermedial studies on cinema and video art'.

Since 2007 Frank&Robbert / Robbert&Frank work together as an artistic duo.

They construct installations with neon lights and lots of wood. Often they perform in these spheres. They’re also true filmers: they document their lives by filming it, often during weird travels. They mix the ‘performance’ video’s with internet found footage and their documentary videos to generate new content.

In 2008 they won the national finale of the ‘Kunstbende’ competition, a contest for young starting artists. In that same year they ended top 20 ranking in the national television program ‘The canvascollection’, a show about talented artists in Belgium. In 2012 they got selected for the finals with their video ‘What about American History’. This was exhibited at the national museum for fine arts BOZAR, Brussels.
In 2010 F&R R&F started collaborating with Kristian Van der Heyden, who created the concept of BELCHING (Radical Improvisation Performance Piece On Film). Robbert became the standard BELCHING cameraman and Frank became one of the two leading actors. The were selected for the Skena Up festival in Pristhina, Kosovo.

Robbert&Frank / Frank&Robbert both finished their Masters Multimedial Design at the Royal Akademia of fine arts KASK, Ghent in 2012. Their graduation project ‘A Journey into Space’, a mix between video art projections on the floor with interaction of pulp theater and floating rocks / garden gnomes, won the national Horlait Dapsens Prize and was selected for the ‘Theater Aan Zee’ competition.

During the summer of 2012 they got selected for the European Start Point Prize with their sphere / installation ‘A Place of Peace and Quiet’. This mix of a wooden shack / horoscope scape / Google search interactive video / galaxy exploration thing, was exhibited at DOX gallery, Prague. Afterwards this concept has been travelling around, being exhibited at different locations in different contexts.

Currently Frank&Robbert / Robbert&Frank are developing a new theater play produced by the Ghent based art house CAMPO Victoria. They’ve also been collaborating with a new international video art platform called PORT ACTIF, which refers to`The Collective of Portatives` originally conceived by Marcel Duchamp and Francis Picabia, but founded in Belgium in 2010. This initiative is an international collaboration between 8 young artists and brought them to places like Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, New York, Qatar, London, etc. screening their own work and scouting new video artists.
