1. Your aim is to be able to draw expressive and accurate lines in Illustrator. With practice you can draw any shape on the fly using the Pen tool, but to begin with you may find this difficult and a little confusing. Here I show you a drawing technique that lets you plan your points and refine them until they create the line you want. Remember, the pen tool does not create lines when you click, instead it creates the points that the line passes through, like fixing down parts of a thread or string. This technique is only a stepping stone towards more spontaneous drawing in illustrator and it is slower than drawing 'on the fly'.
