As a winemaker I walk through countless vineyards all over the world and every now and again I come across one that stands out from the rest. The Vintner’s Quest is a new series of wines from Chamisal that explore some of these incredible vineyards. The designation “8N” refers to the distance (in kilometers) and direction to the vineyard source from Chamisal. In this case, the Righetti Vineyard is 8 kilometers to our north. Planted by the Righetti family, who have been farming in the Edna Valley for generations, this young vineyard produces exceptional Pinot Noir that we are fortunate enough to be able to make wine from.
The 2010 8N comes from the Calera clone and its ample red and black fruit aromas, supple structure and lovely finesse persuaded us to create this very special bottling. Look for more Vintner’s Quest wines in your future wine club shipments.
Our Pinot Noirs are famous for their intensity and the latest Estate bottling is no exception. Using nine of the 10 clones planted in our Chamisal Vineyard, it has all the complexity one would expect, underscored by notes of tangerine and savory spice that make up our signature “Chamisal Spice” profile.
"Califa" is the Modoc Indian term for "prettiest one", and that's what these wines are to us. These bottlings are blended from the most opulent, seductive and powerful barrels of the vintage. The Califa wines are the result of stringent tastings and evaluations to ensure that these few bottles truly are the most intense and flavorful wines of the vintage.
Chamisal was the very first vineyard planted in the Edna Valley appellation in 1973 by the Goss family, who named the estate for the fragrant Chamise, a native white-flowered shrub that thrived on the property.
