1. Jan Amos Comenius, one of the towering figures of the Moravian church, lived in an age marked by religious intolerance. Even so, he himself demonstrated a remarkably progressive and open attitude towards other religions, especially Islam. The presenter, arguing that “the Moravian tradition has within it not only useful but also important theological material to guide and generate an open and positive approach to Islam and other religions,” will explore the lessons we can draw from Comenius’s work for interreligious cooperation in our own time.

    Livingstone Thompson is a Jamaican-born theologian with many years’ experience in post-secondary education, the ecumenical movement and non-governmental organizations. He is an ordained minister in the Moravian Church and served as President of the Moravian Church in Jamaican & the Cayman Islands. His extensive ecumenical involvements include serving as General Secretary of the Jamaica Council of Churches and as a member of the Central Committee & Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches.

    Dr. Thompson currently supervises postgraduate research in Africa-led Pentecostalism and lectures in world religions (particularly Judaism, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism) at All Hallows College and St Patrick’s College, both schools of Dublin City University, Ireland. His books include A Protestant Theology of Religious Pluralism and A Formula for Conversation: Christians and Muslims in Dialogue. He is also the founder of Living Cultural Solutions Ltd (culturalsolutions.ie), a training agency and consultancy specializing in intercultural dialogue and cultural mediation. Under the aegis of this company he has delivered intercultural training to hundreds of staff in private and public bodies and now manages a peace and reconciliation project in the border regions of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
