Haole- Hawaiian slang for a non-Polynesian, typically a white person.
I was visiting some friends on the beautiful island of Kauai last summer. My thoughts would go back and forth between enjoying where I was as well as the terrible fact that those lands were forcibly taken by the US (like the entire USA as well as many other lands by other countries as well). I was on a quiet beach, making my "art" film of the patterns of black sand changing with each coming wave. The occurrence of what happens in the film is true and not staged. That was a local granny cussing at me(white blonde)! First I was stunned by her rudeness, but afterward I understood and even later much appreciative for the reality that turns the piece into something much more. It's interesting to think about land ownership, who is allowed to appreciate it. I found out from my friend that the woman had lived by that beach for generations. Most of the beach front is now owned by "Haoles" and recently someone had tried to erect a fence to cut off the woman's beach access.
