FLYfx worked with Director Rob Luehrs from NOLA Pictures and Editor Scott Gibney from Outside editorial on this test spot for Dr. Sholl's. The spot was shot using the RED camera and finished in HD. FLYfx was thrilled to do the modeling and animation for the the "insole ball guys" using Lightwave on Mac OS X, which were a simplified version of the full up elements we were emulating from the real spots. The 3d was rendered as a sequence of still image "key frames" that were animated in the Smoke Advanced system at FLYfx to achieve a viable and low-cost solution for this test. We also handled the color work and other visual fx including sky replacements and titling. A good time was had by all.

FLYfx just completed work on this inspiring short for Crossroads Entertainment in our Flame Premium HD Suite.
Working in Smoke Advanced and using a quicktime soft-import workflow we were able to quickly assemble a cut - but first we had to interlace all of the 3d renders - which were rendered at a staggering 60 fps in full HD, with mattes and depth passes. We wanted to keep everything "live" so we could process anything we wanted in a progressive frames environment - or not - and the Smoke Advanced was the perfect solution. Working on either side of that interlacing process - at will - gave us maximum creative control and speed - without having to worry about going back to clean up some glitches on the progressive frames after the finesse was added.
As we tackled each compositing, color-correcting, glitch- fixing, sky-replacement and depth-of-field-adding task to all the various clips, FLYfx took advantage of the latest Smoke toolset as well as its Furnace, Tinder and Sapphire plug-ins for cleanup and adding some extra sparkle. Mocha was used as well to offload much of the tracking work.
The amazing thing was at the end of the job we decided to try some other interlacing methods - yeah, that first step - to improve the quality of the playback - especially on blu-ray. It took some work but the Smoke Advanced allowed us to change this with relative ease as we dug through our work - and the improvements actually floored us, everyone was thrilled with the last minute tweak, total Home-Run! We love that.
