About dance theatre X:
“The liberatory voice ... is characterized by opposition, by resistance. It demands that paradigms shift—that we learn to talk—to listen—to hear in a new way.” – bell hooks
Inspired by the evocative power of the symbol “X” (as signifier of intersection, as the signature of millions of displaced Africans who were never taught to read or write, as a mathematic symbol for an unknown, as a group of superheroes, as the label of an entire generation), dance theatre X is a project-driven organization that identifies and creates project-specific ensembles of dancers/performers, artistic collaborators, and scholars during the creative and touring life of a project we are currently developing. dtX is the creative hub for realizing multi-disciplinary and inter-cultural dance-theatre and humanities projects that address issues of identity, selfhood, and belonging in an effort to interrogate received and mediated notions of who we are. We foster synergistic relationships between dancers, actors, visual artists, writers/poets, musicians, and academics that allow dtX to explore topics from a variety of disciplinary standpoints and to optimize its artistic output in multiple presentational formats. dtX is committed to critically examining, promoting, and enacting liberatory aesthetic practices that provide space for social reflection, commentary, and critique, investigating the ‘individuality of the individual’ in relationship to the community context.
