1. Video by MONA for Sabrina Amrani and Galerie Krinzinger

An interview with Pakistani artist Waqas Khan during the opening of his groundbreaking exhibition at Manchester Art Gallery, the artist's first solo museum presentation.

Waqas Khan’s minimalist drawings resemble webs and celestial expanses. Inspired by patterns of biological organic growth and also by the lives and literature of Sufi poets, his work is a meditation on life, togetherness, and the universe. His contemplation is made visible in ink on paper and his work invites our contemplation. Using small dashes and minuscule dots, his large-scale, monochromatic works are composed of either red, blue, white or black ink. In a carefully created installation, the visitor is led around the space from small-scale drawings, to a large scale floor based work, to new drawings made especially for Manchester.

  2. Video by MONA for Berliner Festspiele

Berlin Art Link Productions spoke to Thomas Oberender, artist Chris Salter, and Isabel de Sena, curator of ‘Arrival of Time’, about the diverse body of works presented in ‘Limits of Knowing’, which runs until July 31st.

“Immersion means, basically, that you forget the medium,” explains Thomas Oberender, Artistic Director of the Berliner Festspiele, in his introduction to the current exhibition ‘Limits of Knowing’ at Martin-Gropius-Bau. The range of works on display in ‘Limits of Knowing’, presented as part of the wider ‘Immersion’ program, play with our understanding of the borders of art, opening up spaces to enter and explore, and awakening perception and sensation beyond the purely visual.

The artists presented in the exhibition aim to activate concepts, familiar to our knowledge-based society, through sensations rarely considered as tools of reason: anticipation, premonition or bewilderment. The use of VR, smart textiles, sensors and apps propel the visitor into the work on another level and create experiences often felt rather than fully understood.

  4. Video by MONA for Bergen Assembly / Berlin Art Link Magazine

Lebanese sound artist and composer Tarek Atoui curated a section of this year's Bergen Assembly, located in the recently closed community swimming pool Sentralbadet. In his piece 'WITHIN', Atoui continued his long-standing exploration of hearing diversities and how deafness can influence the way we experience sound performance. Together with the local deaf community, he interrogated different musical instruments that could address both deaf and hearing people.

Accompanying ‘WITHIN’ at Sentralbadet, Atoui invited Paris based curator duo, Council (Grégory Castéra and Sandra Terdjman), to create the exhibition ‘Infinite Ear’, a series of “Sonic Therapies” such as Deep Listening and Sound Massage, a program of screenings and exhibitions looking at inaudible phenomena and objects.

'WITHIN' and 'Infinite Ear' were performed in the context of the Bergen Assembly, a triennial event in Bergen, Norway devoted to contemporary art and research. Additional sections of Bergen Assembly were curated by freethought and Praxes. Berlin Art Link Productions interviewed Tarek Atoui about the concept behind his contribution to this year's event.

  5. Video by MONA for Aurora

Aurora 2013 celebrated the theme “Light of Convergence” in October with over 90 international artists presenting art works across a span of 19 city blocks. Light, sound, performance and video art, as well live music, food trucks, and pop-up bars transformed the Dallas Art District into an immersive art space. The iconic architecture of the Wyly Theater served as a projection screen for Aurora 2013′s featured art installation “Blueprints and Perspectives” by the art collective 3_Search, a forest of LED bulbs was created for Audiopixel’s installation “Arbor Borealis”, and Shane Pennington’s “Points of Life” presented an awe-inspiring stage-curtain made from a programmable grid of LED lights, combined with a live music performance by Jazz vocalist Kally Price, accordionist Dan Cantrell and double bassist Daniel Fabricant.

These and many more interactive works explored the dialectic and convergence between the individual and communal consciousness. With over 40,000 attendees at the free and public event, Aurora 2013 was widely successful in illuminating its audience with conversation and exchange of ideas.

A CinePoem of Berlins trainstation Ostkreuz before the gigantomanic reconstruction 2005-2007.
The film bespeaks the loss of atmosphere, individuality and social ties, suggests that there is a difficult path to be taken between the trade-offs of necessary change and the preservation of evolved structures. It is an attempt to memorialize in poetic images this decrepit and yet so charming train station at Ostkreuz.
