1. True Brains is a Zombie Comedy set in the thoroughly removed outback town of Bindaree Gulch. On the surface it is idyllic; vast horizons in every direction, clear skies and friendly faces – but every town has its skeletons. And this town’s skeletons won’t stay buried.

The world has been hit with an unknown virus causing people to come back from the dead. As the crisis is still in its infancy authorities have been able to limit public knowledge with ASIO deciding quarantine is the best remedy for Australia. They’ve chosen Bindaree Gulch as prime real estate due to the town’s isolation, ensuring a tight lid is kept on the situation. Not to mention the country’s first infected citizen Gary Adler (a Gulch resident) continues to work at the local pub with the community treating him no differently. The government has big plans for this little town, and the residents remain peacefully unaware.

True Brains is a re-imagining of the ZomCom genre. Traditional zombies are a brain-eating horde of undead with no emotions or rationale. Our series presents the affected as individuals whose dispositions are relatively unchanged as long as their cravings can be sated with a helping of Lecter’s True Brains™. Rather than cashing in on the traditional ZomCom, True Brains adds the painfully awkward tension of dealing with our undead friends and family as average Aussie battlers who could be pouring you a beer one minute and breaking into your cranium the next.

From the get go we are thrown into the world of Detective Johann Crook. In this small outback town, it’s apparent the majority of things aren’t quite right. Dead bodies to the left, undead bodies to the right, and one cop in the middle who is driven by booze, vegetables and his search for the truth. Buses full of undead are due to arrive with little warning and there are concerns that supplies of Lecter’s True Brains™ could run out before they arrive. Crook attempts to unveil the greater conspiracy with the assistance of his simple yet dedicated partner Constable Riley. On the other side of town, recent arrivals Mort and Mary-Anne are experiencing a more typical reaction to zombies: freaking out. This unwittingly leads them to discover the truth that Crook has been searching for.

True Brains is Shaun of the Dead munching on A Country Practice with a chaser of Twin Peaks. It takes its name from Pop Culture but gets its brains from a violent and sordid history book. The show takes a darkly comic approach to questions of immigration, assimilation and authority. Utilising the zombie as a metaphor for all kinds of social, political and religious deviants, True Brains explores large-scale problems and questions through the exploration of a small town and its inhabitants. It’s more true blue than True Blood.
