1. This song goes out to Fleur Mainville.

On October 27, Dutch singer-songwriter Diftong releases Dying of the Light as a tribute to Dylan Thomas, the famous Welsh poet who was born on this day 100 years ago The song is a track on Diftong’s fourth album The Rocket Swing on Come Undone Records expected in February 2015.

Diftong was struggling with the chorus for a song about untimely death, when he remembered a poem from his Dylan Thomas Omnibus. He looked it up and saw right away that he would never be able to find words that good. “Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.” He decided to use those lines for the chorus.

On Dying of the light, Diftong sings and plays banjo and is accompanied by five Canadian musicians. Dale Murray plays guitar, lap steel, bass and percussion, Brian Murray drums and Fleur Mainville fiddle. Dale, Christina Martin and Matt Epp sing harmony vocals. The song was produced by Dale Murray.

Right after the recording of The Rocket Swing, things took a dramatic turn when Fleur was taken to hospital with serious health problems. Fleur had been treated for cancer before, but it returned and she has a real fight on her hands. The song now stands for her struggle as well.

Diftong sees himself as a poet and songwriter who plays his own music rather than a singer who writes his own songs. His music is a type of Americana with a ragged twist, covering the area where folk, country and rock overlap. Mix equal parts of Neil Young and the Gourds; stir in some Jim Croce and 16 Horsepower and you might come up with a Diftong sound.
