Los Angeles is the only city I arrived to BEFORE the cops had shut down the Occupy encampment. SMH, kind of funny to always be perpetually late. But arriving when I do, my main question is always WHAT NOW!
WARNING! This is not a self fulfilling prophecy video that shows how awesome our revolution is, this is the real deal right here, Good and Bad, as it happened in LA.
Police did eventually shut down #OccupyLA City Hall camp two weeks after Zuccotti - the real question remains - now that we found love what are we gonna do with it! What will a reOccupation look like where you live?
THE THROWAWAYS tells the story of a formerly homeless filmmaker, activist and co-director Ira McKinley, who articulates his experience of living on the streets through the lens of a video camera.
This project is more than just a film, it is an expression of the anger, frustration, depression, joys and hopes of people who have been historically stereotyped, silenced and marginalized by the mainstream media. Tracing his past from growing up in Ithaca, NY, where at the age of 14 his father was shot by police, THE THROWAWAYS places these personal narratives against the backdrop of a grassroots movement that is rising up, using the power of the people to challenge the slashing of publicly funded programs and services in inner city communities. Not a simple illumination of individuals at their weakest, THE THROWAWAYS seeks to inspire and empower by telling these collective stories of struggle while demonstrating that so long as hope exists the power to change is present.

I arrived in Oakland the day after the city shut down Snow Park, the last #OccupyOakland encampment downtown. Hanging back and observing, I met a lot of young people with real enthusiasm for the movement. I filmed one of these young men Chris, at the short lived 18th and Linden occupy, which is featured in this piece, in a black enclave a seven minute walk from downtown Oakland.
Pretty sure I documented a chem trail in there, look for the X that marks the spot.
