The gaming community can be considered “toxic” for female players, and we aimed to identify and explore the reluctance of female players to even refer to themselves as gamers. When women play these multi-player games, they are often met with harassment and discrimination. Their username, avatar, and voice are all “giveaways” to male players that they are in the company of a female. Through our interviews, we asked women about these experiences and their opinions on gaming culture, as well as how they think it could evolve to be more inclusive to such a large portion of the community, so that women no longer feel the need to use gender-neutral usernames or avoid speaking during gameplay, and can speak about gaming without being written-off by male gamers.
