A group of leading international scientists, doctors and professors have spent their lives trying to find out what is the best way to eat. A pattern has begun to emerge in their research, which shows that our animal-based diets are the cause of our most challenging health and environmental problems. Having to battle against their own beliefs, and those of the institutions they worked for, they have come up with a solution that will change people's lives forever. They share their ideas on how we can not only prevent prevalent diseases like cancer and heart disease but also cure them. And also how applying the same principles can dramatically reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, at the same time as providing more food for the planet. In accordance with this scientific evidence, pioneering farmers and chefs around the world are discovering new ways to produce and prepare the food we should be eating.
At this farm, you won’t see any animals squeezed into lots or being fed on grain. All the livestock are raised out on grass, how nature intended. If there was an ideal farm, this would be it.
Kelly, the farm’s manager, has a long background in industrial farming, but became disillusioned with the system and decided he could do better. ‘What we practice here is animal husbandry. It means just that you have a relationship with the animals and it's just like if your wife isn't happy, you're not going to be happy. But it is a lost art. What we have done in conventional agriculture is applied an industrial model to a biological, nurturing type of system. The industrial model works good for making cars and widgets, but it doesn't work too good when it comes to trying to produce our food."
Despite all we had heard on our travels about the problems of raising livestock for food, we wanted to make sure we heard both sides of the story. We had just finished interviewing Peter Singer in Princeton, and were on our way to New York to have our first vegan Thanksgiving, when we happened upon Cherry Grove Farm. The farm goes beyond organic. It is a holistic livestock farm providing grass-fed beef, lamb, pastured pork and eggs from free-range chickens.
Did you know that even if you buy organic beef, it doesn't necessarily mean it is grass-fed? And although organic standards require animals to have access to the outdoors, in theory, it can mean as little as having the barn door open, so the animals can still be kept in a feedlot.
If you do still want to consume a small amount of meat in your diet, then make sure it is from a farm like Kelly’s. Don’t just buy whatever is cheapest at the supermarket. Think how fussy you are about cutting your hair. You wouldn’t let any hairdresser cut your hair without knowing them, and even then without painstakingly watching every snip. So why put any old food into your body? Always know how your food got to your plate.
Although we both personally care about how animals are treated, our mission was not an animal rights one. We did not want to put anyone off by using shock tactics. So you won’t see any pictures of animals being mistreated in our films. However, if you aren’t aware of how animals are raised in industrial food production, and would like to know more, there is plenty of information on the following sites: ciwf.org. , peta.org.uk/
