The Rag was an underground newspaper published from 1966-1977 in Austin, Texas. It was one of the first and most important of the Sixties underground papers, was the heart of the Austin counterculture scene, and has become something of a legend. Many former Rag staffers are now involved in publishing The Rag Blog, an online reincarnation of the paper. This is Part I of a documentary about The Rag being produced by People's History in Texas.
For this collage I took clips from my various productions, including the twelve hour PROCESS [at the time I was calling my performances PROCESSES] at THE SAN FRANCISCO ART INSTITUTE for my masters. A bit of trivia: the redhead is Sybil Holiday. At the time she was the manager of the San Francisco strip club THE LUSTY LADY. She became a famous dominatrix.
More about the San Francisco Art Institute 12-hr. performance:
The 12-hour piece at the S. F. Art Institute in 1982 combined a joyful primitive eroticism – the childhood desire to mix up ingredients, to make a big mess – with the surreal effect of extending the length of performance time. This was my first piece that proclaimed itself as pure shamanistic art.
