Back to Your Senses

A profile of sound artist James Eck Rippie. "Most striking to me, during our interviews, was the driving force behind James' work as an artist. He wants to live a life in which everyone is more highly aware of their surroundings, and he wants to make work that demands that level of awareness from others. His work is a call to come "Back to Your Senses" in a very literal way; asking the receiver be fully present in the moment, and experience the nuances of their own perception." Back to Your Senses is a video series and blog about people who are mid-leap in the process of turning their passion into their vocation; Americans who are living their dreams, despite the desperate state of our economy, and sometimes directly because of it.

At a time when technology has trumped functional know-how, and our country is falling from its superpower status, people are feeling uneasy. They realize they’ve relied on a system that may not have their backs, and that something needs to change. The people we’ll spend time with are turning this queasiness into action and taking risks at a time when they still have something to lose. They are part of an unaffiliated movement of people who are coming back to their senses; using themselves as their primary resource, and working towards a goal that directly impacts the quality of their lives and those of their community. They are farmers, artists, scientists, and entrepreneurs. And, in one way or another, they are leaving the safety of what they’ve known for the sake of what they love. Some of these folks are still in midair, and some seem to have landed, for the moment at least, on their feet. What is their craft? Why should we care? What’s at stake for them now? For their families? The first series of videos features people in Northwestern rural Michigan. The videos, and thoughts about the project creators own process will be posted monthly on the Back to Your Senses VLOG at backtoyoursenses.org/VLOG
