Gracie Jiu-Jitsu popularity as a self defense system has increased alot in the last couple of years. It teaches that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger person by using leverage and proper technique. The practioner applies joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the other person.
Hélio Gracie (October 1, 1913 – January 29, 2009) had a weak health in adolescence, being forbidden to perform any physical activity. Hélio, together with his brother Carlos Gracie, founded the martial art of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Hélio Gracie became a Brazilian martial artist who showed fascinants results, inside and out the ring, which made him the first hero of this brazilian sport. Grandmaster Hélio was the father of the world-renowned fighters Rickson Gracie, Royler Gracie, Royce Gracie, Relson Gracie, and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Co-founder Rorion Gracie. After dedicating all of his life to this style of fight, Helio passed away at the age of 95, leaving his sons and grandchildren to keep the family legacy on going.
A friend of Hélios sons from childhood, Pedro Sauer is one of two non-family member Black Belt from Hélio Gracie. Professor Pedro has also dedicated his life to the sport and presenting it to the world. Professor Pedro Sauer was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where from an early age, he began training in the martial arts. At age fifteen he started to train Jiu-Jitsu with the Gracie brothers and soon became convinced that Jiu-Jitsu was the most effective of all the martial arts. Professor Sauer is a 8th Degree Red/Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from Helio and Rickson Gracie.
Most people look at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a martial art and combat sport which focuses on ground grappling. But Gracie Jiu-Jitsu practioners are of all ages, training all over the world. These people are not looking for a future in mixed martial arts competitions. Their main focus is on self defence and they have found a sport that suits them and gives them a new aspect to fullness of life.
