1. In November 2011, Toronto's acclaimed Breaking the Cycle Ambassador Leadership Program partnered with Manifesto to facilitate a life changing journey and cultural experience for four youth ambassadors who traveled to Kingston, Jamaica to participate in the 2nd annual Manifesto Jamaica Festival of Art'ical Empowerment. This brief video documentation demonstrates Manifesto's continued efforts to educate, expose, and empower youth through various forms of art & culture, while having a little fun in the process.

This year’s Manifesto Festival of Community of Culture is set to give its patrons a seven day display of youth arts in Toronto. With stalwarts such as Jay Electronica, J. Period and Black Thought headlining the much anticipated main event on Sunday, September 26, only the most talented of young artists have been selected to grace the same stage. Among them are two Jamaicans – a first for Manifesto.
Fast rising stars, Protoje and Janine ‘Jah9’ Cunningham, will be representing the latest evolution of music, currently taking place in Jamaica, for the first time outside the island’s borders. This will be a unique opportunity for Torontonians to catch a glimpse of the Jamrock culture revolution, no doubt being led by these two unique characters. Protoje has been hailed for his potent lyrical delivery that blends his hip-hop, roots reggae and dub influences into a fusion now being referred to as Dub Rock. In Jah9, fans are drawn to a vocal strength witnessed on Earth only ever so often, combined with her poignant messages in an emerging genre called Jazz on Dub.

“I cannot express how excited I am to share Protoje’s and Jah9's music and messages with Toronto. Their performances at Manifesto will mark the first official Reggae component of Manifesto Toronto, which is so timely with the extension of Manifesto Jamaica taking place this October,” said Manifesto Executive Director, Che Kothari. “Without a doubt, both of these artists’ uber-talent will be noticed worldwide and we are lucky that Toronto is the first stop.”

“I’m very excited about being back in Toronto,” said Protoje who once lived in the city for three years. “Going back to play on Yonge Street is surreal.”
It will be Jah9’s first visit to Toronto and she is more than ready for it. She expressed, “I am looking forward to sharing the stage with the likes of D'bi Young, Black Thought and Jay Electronica, and passing on the real, hardcore, positive, Jamaican flavor!”

The show will be happening at Yonge-Dundas Square on Sunday, September 26. Both Protoje and Jah9 are expected to perform at 4:10pm in a joint set backed by D'bi Young's live band. See the full lineup for the day here: themanifesto.ca/festival/day7/

Their next major event will be back in Jamaica where they will be headliners at Manifesto Toronto's sister festival, the Manifesto|Jamaica Festival of ART'ical Empowerment, which will take place this October 14-17 in Kingston Jamaica.
