On the weekend of 13-15 August, 23 members of the Refugee Rights Action Network took toys to Leonora detention centre and visited people there. But the Department of Immigration said Refugee Rights Action Network (RRAN) representatives have not even entered the facility (SMH Aug 16 2010).
It is a blatant lie! Like so many lies and half-truths we hear from government and politicians about asylum seekers, detention and Australia's human rights responsibilities.
Hear what ordinary people have to say about what they saw at Leonora. No bureaucratic spin. No political agenda beyond a belief that human rights are for real and for everyone. This public forum was held to tell our stories of the Leonora Compassion Caravan that happened over the weekend of 13-15 August, 2010.
The forum started at 6:30pm and includes questions and discussion; the speakers include several of those who were able to visit at Leonora during our time there and special guest Ian Rintoul of Refugee Action Collective Sydney. We also reported back on the donations of toys and other gifts which we took as part of the compassion caravan.
The forum took place in the board room of the Ethnic Communities Council Offices and we would like to take the opportunity to thank the ECCWA for their support.
