Nathan Kil and I wrote this song last summer at the beginning of the recording of the Kind Ghosts album. I knew the name of the album would be “Kind Ghosts” before this song came along. Then Nathan, who co-wrote and performed synths on this album, sent over some music to consider. Instantly, I called my producer Jamie Siegel and said, “Tell Nathan we’ve got our title track.”

With the song “Kind Ghosts”, I’m describing one of the most important spiritual experiences of my life. On that August night on Fire Island’s Cherry Grove beach, I spent a few hours pressing the reset button on my life, engaged in a definite dialogue with something outside and greater than myself. It was only fitting that video director Julian Rad and I return to Cherry Grove film the video for “Kind Ghosts.” Most of the video is shot in a John Eberhardt-designed house called “House of Orange,” which used to be the Belvedere hotel before the current Belvedere Hotel existed. (It’s also for sale, I’ll have you know, and if I had the cash, I’d buy it right up). Thanks to Nathan and Jamie for creating this song with me. Thank you to Julian who created this creepy-cool video in one day, which used no studio lighting (and no makeup, as you can see in the close-ups). At the time, I had no idea why he was affixing his iPhone to the top of the main camera but all that ghostly footage is filmed using an iPhone app!!!!!

    “Kind Ghosts”

Lyrics: Derek Nicoletto Music: Nathan Kil/Derek Nicoletto

“What now? What now?” I cried.

Cried to the summer night, And the summer night replied,

“Remember your name, sing it to the sky. Go out and dance for yourself tonight.”

Kind ghosts will carry us. Carry greater plans. Care greater than we do to …Remember your name, sing it to the sky, Go out and dance for yourself tonight, Let go, let go or be dragged behind.Kind ghosts will carry you home tonight.

On that beach, my dog beside me I sang …my name. My name.

Remember your name, sing it to the sky. Go out and dance for yourself tonight

Let go, let go, or be dragged behind

Kind Ghosts will carry you home tonight

Let go, let go, or be dragged behind

Kind Ghosts will carry us home tonight.

  2. Directed, edited shot by Julian Rad for Works Productions. "Hustler with a Rescue Plan" music/lyrics/performance by Derek Nicoletto for "Kind Ghosts" LP due 2011. Shot in Chinatown, NYC. Song recorded at JRock Studios, Chelsea, NYC.

    "Hustler with a Rescue Plan"

Me make music on canvas clean
Gonna paint a path out of beige and bleak

    Instead of selling rust,
    Start sweatin’ green.
    Gonna use a brush
    My mama made with

A beggar in a high hat
    Hustler with a rescue plan
    I’m gonna make it out.

Hustler (gonna make it, gonna make it out)
A Hustler with a Rescue Plan.

    Me make music, splatter melody
Up stroke down paint out of beige and bleak.

Instead of pimping dust, start smelling green
Gonna use the brush my mama made me with.

A beggar in a high hat
A Hustler with a Rescue Plan
    I’m gonna make it out.

Hustler (gonna make it, gonna make it out)
A Hustler with a Rescue Plan.

A Beggar in a High Hat
A Hustler with a Rescue Plan
Salon de la Rue des Moulins
Will make a fool out of Satan.
    A mountain of cash’ll
Make a man out of me
    Brush a man out of…

Hustler (gonna make it, gonna make it out)
A Hustler with a Rescue Plan.

  3. "San Simeon" by Derek Nicoletto, from "Just Panic And Get It Over With"

    “San Simeon” by Derek Nicoletto

And there's no reason to hide, anymore, from the sun.

And the words arrived to fill my notes,
    said, "Hello!"
    They gurgled to my shore,
"Hello we're here. Hello we're here.
    Welcome
    to
    San Simeon
    San Simeon
    San Simeon
    Oh, and our sun.”

And the cloud on the left is mine.
We'll share the rest during our time.
I'm by myself, but not alone.
    ‘Cause mountains forgot their dresses
    Silver-lining messes
    We’re all laughing guests of

    San Simeon
    San Simeon
    San Simeon
    Oh, and our sun.

    Emergency is over
My new friend, she sleeps closer.

(No one else is really nearby)
    San Simeon
(so there’s no reason to hide.)
    San Simeon
    (Nobody is really nearby)
    San Simeon
(and there’s just no reason to hide.)
    Oh, and our sun.
