Every year as summer approaches we look forward to Stoney Fest, in Johnstown, PA. Great atmosphere, fun whitewater, and good friends; an FGZ favorite. This year, we were blessed from the clouds above with 2 inches of rain. This made for high water levels and the ability to paddle creeks we hadn't yet paddled before... as well as the beloved Stoney Creek River.
Personal First Decent of the Lower Big Sandy and I just couldn't walk this gem.
Big Splat is one of the most revered drops on the east coast. The difficult entrance demands a narrow line past caves and ill-placed boulders to skirt a horseshoe hole filled with pin rocks. This entrance hole flushes immediately downstream to a 12 foot drop aimed at the eponymous rock. The real danger lies in the boils below that tractor any off-line boater into the cave behind the curtain, where extraction requires a lucky rope-throw.
Being on line is mandatory; and this is a tough rapid for a lefty.
