Ive had the ML 5d mark 3 raw hack on my camera since it became available but haven't really had time to shoot anything on it.
I plan to shoot a real project on it in the next few weeks so ive been carrying the camera around with me on other shoots just grabbing some quick clips here and there to test workflow and exposure on.
I finally have a workflow I am happy with and figured out the best way (for me) to expose the camera to look like a cinema camera when shooting raw. That is exposing for the highlights at as low of an ISO as possible, often underexposing by about 1 stop to 1.5 stops at times depending on scene contrast, then adding a custom curve to bring it back up to a balanced exposure- this puts middle grey at a more balanced zone. The custom LUT I made is also based on Alexa rec709 color matrix which really helps with making the colors and skin tone less "canon".
My 5d raw workflow is:
1. Process .raw in rawmagic (free application to convert to cinemaDNG sequence)
2. Open cinemaDNG clips in resolve
3. In resolve, set raw settings of clips to black magic LOG gamma with highlight protection box checked
4. Apply custom LUT I made based on Alexa r709 output (I will make this available to download soon after a bit more tweaking)
5. Export prores 4444
6. Make horrible edits with bad footage in Premiere
7. Post video to vimeo
8. Troll comments
Lens is old 50mm 2.0 from cccp lomo factory
Song is CCCP national anthem
Location is actually Washington, not Oregon- but I'm trying to cover my tracks as a spy
Black screen at the end is secret encrypted CCCP satellite message unrelated to this test
What do I think?
I think it looks really good- huge potential- it doesn't look as good to me as the higher end cameras like the alexa, or sony f35, f55, f65 or even some Red stuff (actually better color IMO than Red)- but its really close and I think when shooting raw, can intercut with any of the "big boys".
