  2. Amanda Mehl, our lovely Guitar Teach teaching artist, with her students at Mintie White, filmed a music video.

The song is one of Amanda's recent songs 'Habit.' (You can listen to it here: amandawest.bandcamp.com) The kids had gotten really excited about this song after she shared with them after the school's winter break. So much so, that they looked it up online to learn the words to it by the time they returned in January. They wanted to sing it every week!

The kids then got REALLY excited about the idea of making a music video, and started listing off a million ideas of their own. (And they are so clever!) The internet is where kids get their music from these days, so it made sense to have that be a part of the class.

This project is a prime example of how beneficial and rewarding it is to take the students natural interests and ideas, and fly with them, and result in the same [and more] learning objectives. It is a great motivation for them to complete something in which they take great pride.

Description
Mariposa's Art
Mariposa's Art, a program of the Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County, provides after-school art and music programs and community workshops that focus on developing leadership and social skills, addressing key health issues, and promoting academic success and career development. Mariposa's Art delivers art, music, and leadership programs to more than 2,000 youth in Santa Cruz County annually in after school and community-based programs.

The Art & Leadership program uses arts education to inspire students to create and develop artistic skill, while promoting community service and development of leadership skills.

Mariposa's Art Teach, Mural Teach, Drama Teach, and Guitar Teach are mentorship and teacher training programs where high school students can experience teaching as a career. The Teach programs also give elementary and middle school students the opportunity to learn art and music from mentors close to their age in an environment with a small student to teacher ratio.

High school students learn how to be teachers through an intensive training period, and receive elective credit or a stipend for their teaching time. This opportunity provides high school youth not only the pride and excitement of a job, but also a window into the experience of teaching. Over the course of the training, they learn how to speak in front of the class with confidence, create lesson plans, manage their time, guide student behavior, and evaluate their success. They learn engaging, culturally-relevant art or music projects, and then teach the projects to elementary and middle school students in after-school classes.

A facilitator, or teaching artist, is present in the classroom to provide support for high school teachers and help with behavior management and classroom flow. High school students will continue to train and meet with facilitators on a weekly basis to learn new art projects, write lesson plans and review their performance in class.
