Jane Millican is an artist living and working in the North East of England

Millican is a painter working in an abstract style with a keen interest in the surface and brush-marks of paint. Her current method engages with these surfaces by creating drawing in graphite, scaled up from initial quick sketches made with thick paint. These meticulous flat drawings in graphite pencil are images entirely drained of colour. Her images will reference nearby places, locations in the North East, public urban spaces, and places at the edge of things, generally though these closely observed details will appear to have a more abstract quality.

Jane Millican trained at Northumbria University in Fine Art before going to complete her MA at the Slade School in London in 2002. Her work has been exhibited in the John Moores Painting Prize, and in international group exhibitions in Paris, Barcelona and New York. Most recently her work was shown as part of the group show Graphite at Gallery North, Northumbria University.
