Manomin (2017, 7:47) is a short documentary of a trip in the fall of 2017 where a group of youth investigated the so called 'Rice Wars' near Ardoch, Ontario that took place in the early 1980's. The youth from the Katarokwi School traveled by canoe to visit the site of the dispute between local Indigenous groups that had been cultivating the rice for generations, and a business that was trying to harvest the rice for profit with the support of the government. Elders and community members that were present before and during the conflict spoke to the youth about the history of the area and the rice, as well as Indigenous agricultural practices, food sovereignty and sustainability. In addition, the youth participated and assisted in the production of the short film as well, to learn about filmmaking in the process. This film was made in collaboration with Loving Spoonful, Kingston, and a group of youth from the Katarokwi Learning Centre, as well as local Indigenous leaders, elders and community members.
