Our communities are stronger when we embrace and honor our differences. It's also smart business.
Maine has the highest median age of any state in our country and our proportion of residents age 65 and older is projected to almost double between 2000 and 2030*. This has big implications for our workforce since many of our young people are leaving the state for other opportunities and our birth rate is lower than the national average (10.3 per 1,000 vs. 14)**.
For Maine to be truly open for business in the years ahead, we need to grow and improve our workforce. One way to do this is by welcoming those who were forced to flee their countries and are in need of a safe place to raise their families.
