I first started vlogging in 1989, before blogging or vlogging were invented. Over the course of the next 15 years or so, I used to film myself talking to camera regularly. In 1991 I set up a camera at the end of the hospital bed to film the birth of my second baby, in 1995 I set up a camera at the back of the venue to film my band Venus Tree performing at a benefits gig in Sheffield, and in 1996 I filmed me breastfeeding my son. I nearly filmed myself doing a strip-tease, aged 28 in 1987, when I still looked pretty hot, but chickened out and instead filmed an off the cuff interview with the girl who lived in the flat above me, which turned out to be a lot duller than me doing a strip-tease for posterity, but far less scary.
I learnt the hard way, if you fear, you lose.
This first vlog is a bit self-conscious because I haven't vlogged for years, but I'll relax into it with the next one...
Maybe Kubrick was right. The film 2001, A Space Odyssey ends with man’s rebirth as a star child in space, at a time when cyberspace had yet to be invented.
By the dawn of the real 2001, more and more and pioneers are venturing into a strange, unknown territory which has yet to acquire smell or touch. These adventurers are treated with suspicion by many who have never left the real world, for this foreign territory is populated by geeks, freaks, weirdos and stalkers.
The swords and sabers used in this new land do not draw blood, but still pierce the heart. Before MySpace and pre-Facebook, in the ruddy glow of social networking’s first dawn, the weapon of choice is the written word.
Dominique DuBois knows she has to venture into the Wild West of cyberspace, but the last place she expects to end up is a Travelodge Inn in Leeds with the love of her life.
Every Facebook Fan Page has to have a landing page, apparently, where people arrive and you greet them, sometimes with text and images, but also with a video if you fancy it, which I did, as I love making little vids. So here's my Facebook Fan Page welcome video. You can find my page at http://facebook.com/judecalverttoulmin
