Film #1 Mise en Scène
The Mise en scène assignment consists of one shot, with no cuts. The camera must be locked off – in other words no pans, tilts or camera movement of any kind. The camera must be absolutely still. The emphasis in this exercise is on composition and story content delivered by information within the frame. Specifications: no movement permitted whatsoever by the camera. The film is to be silent and shot in B/W. The story is to be told within the frame. Length: 30 seconds.
Film #5 Character Film
This short film features one character. The character is engaged in an activity giving the viewer insight into the character. The character believes they are alone. Specifications: sound may be used. No synch-sound dialog. No music. B/W and/or color. Length: 1 minute exactly.
Film #6 Voice-Over Film
In the voice-over film, spoken word is to be voice-over only and from one person only. No synch-dialog is permitted in this exercise. Sounds (other than the voice) may by synchronous. Images may be related or unrelated to the content of the voice-over. Specifications: sound may be used. No synch-sound dialog. No music. B/W and/or color.
Film #2 Mood Film
In the Mood Film a short is made to a piece of music. The goal is to evoke a mood. Each filmmaker is to bring in a piece of instrumental music (having no words). The music choice must be approved before shooting. No points will be awarded for the film if the instructor has not approved the music. Filmmakers will then shoot and cut a montage or series of shots accompanied by the music. Specifications: the camera may pan, tilt, or move. Color and/or B/W may be used. Length: 1 minute.
Film #3 6-Shot Film
In the 6-shot film, the filmmaker must tell a story with a beginning, middle and end with only six shots. Movement and the cut are explored, and how shot-to-shot relationships communicate. Specifications: each shot must be exactly 10 seconds in length. Cuts between the 6 shots must be straight cuts, no transitions of any kind. The camera may move. Shoot in B/W and/or color. Non-synch sound (or “wild” sound) and music (no words) may be used. Length: 1 minute.
