1. This is a test of the Aiptek HSHD hybrid camcorder with external microphone jack. The video is of a nice EIA1956 test pattern since I have a face for radio and this test is about the audio anyway. Focus on it. Video is 720p 30fps.

Preliminary testing has shown the external mic jack to have active AGC and be very sensitive to signal levels with a very poor dynamic range. It is very easy to drive it into distortion with popping and clicking on signal peaks.

This clip was from about the 6th or 7th in a series of tests trying to find a signal level that wouldn't distort. The setup is an MXL 990 Mic feeding an Alesis Multimix8 USB mixer with phantom powered. The preamp gain and microphone channel gain are both set on the first index mark above bottom. The Master output gain control starts out at the first index mark and I step it up one index mark at a time. It only gets to about the 3rd index mark before the distortion on peaks is evident.

The microphone is on a shock mount with a pop screen in front of it AC, fans and all background noise sources except for a couple of computer fans are off. I know from previous recordings this is a very low background noise setup with a very large dynamic range.

My preliminary conclusion, unfortunately, is that the external jack is a cosmetic afterthought and not a serious attempt to provide better audio quality.

  2. Just a quick test of the Aiptek HDHS Camera in 720p 30fps mode. This is a quick test of the camera using an external microphone.

The microphone (contrary to the video description) is a Labtec dynamic, noise canceling boom mic on a headset. Clip is raw footage from camera with no post processing

Video is a quick panning test of my cotton field. Weather is overcast and drizzling slightly with breezy conditions.

White balance was set to auto instead of cloudy and color is more like fluorescent balance.

  4. Just a quick test of the Aiptek HDHS Camera in 720p 30fps mode. This is a composite of the test clips with and without the external microphone that has been color corrected and titled in Adobe Premiere Pro and re-exported back as H264 720p 30fps using Adobe Media Encoder.

Video is a quick panning test of my cotton field. Weather is overcast and drizzling slightly with breezy conditions.

Color correction was applied since color balance was on auto. Re-balanced it based on cotton bolls as white reference.

This test was the 3rd or 4th in a series trying to find a boom mic position that would not cause excessive distortion on siganl peaks.

The microphone is boom mounted on a headset with a foam windscreen over it. The boom is on the left side and was positioned straight ahead, about 4-5 inches to the left front of my mouth. Not ideal to minimize noise pickup, but far enough away to keep from popping.

AC, fans and all background noise sources except for a couple of computer fans are off. I know from previous recordings this is a very low background noise setup with a very large dynamic range.

My preliminary conclusion, unfortunately, is that the external jack is a cosmetic afterthought and not a serious attempt to provide better audio quality.
