1. Update: check the 2.0 version! vimeo.com/34824490

A quick installation prototype Emily and I hooked up with the libfreenect Kinect drivers and ofxKinect. The system is doing skeleton tracking on the arm and determining where the shoulder, elbow, and wrist is, using it to control the movement and posture of the giant funky bird!

Speed project - made in a day using openFrameworks and libFreenect.

If you're interested in making projects with the Kinect and openFrameworks check out the addon as it progresses on the OF forums. openframeworks.cc/forum/viewtopic.php?p=24948#p24948

Also keep an eye on the libfreenect GitHub for latest updates to the driver - github.com/OpenKinect/libfreenect/

  2. Inspired by issues relating to climate change, Water Will Be Here imagines what it might feel like if sea levels rose to the point where parts of New York City found themselves underwater.

Most scientists agree that sea levels are rising and that coastal cities, such as Brooklyn, are at risk for flooding. This being the case, it is worth considering the possibility that New York City, or some of its parts, may one day be underwater. This site-specific video installation uses the idea of the East River overflowing in DUMBO to transform this possibility into an experience.

Thirteen modules are connected to a matrix. Each module consists of a microcontroller, a stepper motor and a sphere of steel attached to it with a rubber band. A piezo sensor is placed between motor and sphere. So each element can measure and activate its oscillation through a simple feedback mechanism programmed on each chip.

A analog bar with a magnet on each side controls the action of each of the system elements. Once a sphere is connected to the bar, it starts swinging as long as the bar detaches an rebuilds a new connection to another sphere.

There is no main program outside of the sculpture and no digital connection between the elements. Each module has its own simple program logic and they just start to react to each other because of the physical connections built. No random or chaos must be simulated, because the always rebuilt physical structure of the sculpture becomes its own analogue program for non-linear behaviour. The system produces complex behaviour, although its structure and rules are very simple.
