  2. This is a more complete version of a retouch I did for my X-rite webinar on retouching. The basic approach is Frequency Separation to place texture and color/tone in separate layers. This allows you to re-shade the image while leaving the texture intact. I have to thank Doug Pizac for this wonderful portrait!

  3. After my latest Portfolio Beauty Intensive in NY I select a shot where I loved the warm tones throughout the image. The photo was lit with a single beauty dish (to the right of the frame), the pose and lighting were subtle and the skin tones and warmth of the photo made for a quiet and elegant photograph.

This video shows a sped-up version of my retouch, which took a little less than 20 minutes total. I started by cleaning up skin blemishes, then did frequency separation, enhanced the eyes, corrected color, and added a vignette. Although this is not a tutorial per se, I thought it might be interesting for you to watch the process of perfecting the skin while maintaining detail as I have done here.

I plan on doing more of these in the future, so I hope you enjoy them! If you want retouching tutorials, also please check out my retouching dvd!

  4. Please note that this video is not shown in realtime and has been sped up.

I photographed this model during my first Beauty Portfolio Intensive workshop in NYC (beautyintensive.eventbrite.com).

My goals for this photo were to remove blemishes, improve contrast, and give a porcelain skin look.

The lighting consisted of a 3x4ft softbox directly behind the model, a beauty dish in the front, and a silver reflector beneath her chin. The softbox behind her gave the soft wrapping light around her cheekbones and clavicles as but also decreased the contrast in the photo.
