    Steven Ellis is Professor of History at NUI Galway. He became Head of History in 2004 and is currently Head of the School of Humanities. Professor Ellis is a leading expert on Tudor Ireland. His publications include The making of the British Isles, the state of Britain and Ireland,1450-1660 (Pearson Longman, 2007) and Ireland in the age of the Tudors: English expansion and the end of Gaelic rule, 1447-1603 (Addison Wesley Longman, 1998).

    Sparky Booker was awarded a PhD from Trinity College Dublin in 2012. Her doctoral thesis is entitled 'Gaelicisation and identity in the ‘four obedient shires’ of Ireland’, 1399-1534'. Her published work includes ‘Intermarriage in fifteenth-century Ireland: the English and Irish in the ‘four obedient shires’ in Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy, section C, 113 (2013) and 'Gaelicisation and cultural exchange in late medieval Dublin’ in Seán Duffy (ed.) Medieval Dublin X (Dublin, 2010), pp 287-98.

    Gillian Kenny is a graduate of UCD and Trinity College Dublin. She conpleted her PhD thesis in Trinity College on Women in Medieval Ireland. She is currently a Research Associate in TCD and University of Limerick and is teaching evening classes in UCD and Strathclyde.

  4. Speaker: Seymour Phillips

    Seymour Phillips is Professor Emeritus of Medieval Dublin of UCD having completed a long and distinguished tenure there as Head of Department. Professor Phillips is an Historian of international renown and an expert in the machinations of 14th century high politics in England, Ireland and Scotland. An acknowledged expert on the 14th century and beyond, his works include major publications such as his biography of Aymer de Valence, Earl of Pembroke as well as a recent biography on Edward II which was his contribution to the Yale English Monarchs Series. He coedited 'Ireland, England and the Continent in the Middle Ages and Beyond: Essays in Memory of a Turbulent Friar, F.X. Martin' with Professor Howard Clarke from the Friends of Medieval Dublin.

  5. Speaker: Con Manning

    This talk was part of Milestones of Medieval Dublin. A series of monthly lunchtime lectures which took place during 2013 at the Wood Quay Venue. The series is presented by the Friends of Medieval Dublin and Dublin City Council.

    Con Manning is Senior Archaeologist with the National Monuments Service, Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. He has a particular interest in medieval archaeology and architecture. He has directed many archaeological excavations including Clonmacnoise, Co. Offaly; Roscrea Castle, Co. Tipperary; Glanworth Castle in Co. Cork and Cloughoughter, Co.Cavan. He also directed a large scale excavation at Dublin Castle with Dr Ann Lynch between 1985 and 1987. He was President of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland 2001-2004. He is currently President of the County Kildare Archaeological Society.
