This screencast demonstrates the innitial data visualization capabilities of AURIN. It is a follow up on the Basic Data Shopping screencast. In this episode, we demonstrate how to visualize variables of interest as a choropleth map and a number of scatter plots correlating three different dimensions of a dataset.
This screencast demonstrates the initial interaction with the AURIN Portal - the logging-in through the federated authentcation mechanism of the Australian Access Federation (AAF), the interactive map-based selection of the area of interest, and the search for a dataset and attributes of interest. Note that the data are acquired in real time from federated resources.
This guide helps you get started using the AURIN portal.
In this example we will create an interactive colour-coded map showing the incidence of Type 2 diabetes across the Sydney Metropolitan Region. To get started please visit http://aurin.org.au
Part 1. Logging in
When first visiting portal.aurin.org.au, you will be taken to the AAF login screen.
This drop down list contains every University in Australia, some government organisations and the 'AAF Virtual Home’: Select this if you are not a member of any of the above groups and have received login credentials from AURIN.
In the 'Define Study Area' dialogue, we are going to select a standard geography for the Sydney metropolitan region. To do this, navigate to ‘New South Wales’, then ‘Greater Capital Cities Statistical Areas’ and specify ‘Greater Sydney’
Part 3: Select your Data
Bring up the 'Dataset' browser from the 'Data' panel.
Now the window is being populated with metadata from databases across Australia, particular to our selected geography
As we hover above these data sources, a popup window displays a description of the contents
We want to find information about Diabetes, so we can enter this as a keyword here, and press 'Search'.
These datasets have been returned: We want to select 'SA2 Chronic Disease - Modelled Estimate’
Clicking on the title of the dataset populates the next panel with its attributes.
Tick the checkboxes for 'Statistical Area Level 2 Name', and 'Diabetes - Rate per 100’
Now choose 'Add & Open'. You will see an entry appear in your data cart.
This sends your query to the remote data custodian and returns your data
You can click on the column header to sort from lowest to highest and again for highest to lowest
Part 4: Visualise your Data
To make a map of this data, click on the 'Maps, Charts and Graphs' button.
Choose 'Map Visualisations' and 'Choropleth'
Select our dataset, the attribute we want to map (Diabetes), the number of classes (say 5), a suitable colour palette and we can give our map a descriptive name;
Click 'Add & Display’ and a map appears. We can now see the incidence of Type 2 Diabetes in the Sydney region.
If you open your attribute table again, you can brush your mouse over the data and map to explore complex data and reveal patterns geographically.
