State of the State RI

Guests: Sandra Keating, Associate Professor of Theology at Providence College
Farid Ansari, Imam: Muslim American Dawah Center of RI
Host: Richard August Time: 60 minutes
In this follow-up program the focus is Islam in the modern world. Various terms and practices of Islam are interpreted from Islamic writings. Our guests caution that interpretations vary by source and historical context. For example, groups like ISIS can go far back in writings and find “law,” which serves their purposes. Another example is that the word “infidels” applies those who did not subscribe to monotheism. Today, acts of terrorism are directed at atheism and secularism. Today, such distinctions may have become distorted. The challenge facing Muslims today is that there is not a single authority. In contrast to the vast majority of Muslims, Islamic radicals are outliers.
