The Kittery Land Trust is embarking on its most ambitious endeavor in its 25 year history - conserving the community's last working dairy and the largest Holstein herd in York County. The 300-acre farm has been operated by the Johnson Family since 1947 on some of the most productive and beautiful land in town. The family is working with KLT to put an agricultural easement on the property - they will continue to own the land but are giving up their right to develop it. By conserving the property, KLT is protecting fertile soil, nearly one mile of the headwaters of Spruce Creek, a headwater stream of the York River, rich habitat for wildlife, and open fields and forests for hunting, recreation and education.
