1. / About the Project

As of today, it is estimated that there are more than 7 billion humans living on Earth.

Humans have only been a glimpse in the Earth’s timeline, yet in the last 200 years the evolution of mankind has skyrocketed as well as the need for Earth’s resources.

Skyscrapers are growing taller than the next, like huge trees battling for sunlight. At night, from a higher point of view, traffic evokes lava flowing down a volcano.

Like a giant ant colony, humans have made this planet their own. But what about the Earth? Can we continue to take without consequences? The City Limits tries to show that even though we are the dominant species on the planet, there is something bigger than us.

In Carl Sagan’s own words “Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. It is up to us.”

Human progress and technology are developing at exponential rates but at what cost?

    Where is the city’s limit?

  2. Lukas Irmler and his slackline traveled all the way down to Cape Town, South Africa. On his trip he slacklined at the most beautiful places in the Cape Peninsula. Spots as Cape of Good Hope, Chapman´s Peak and Table Mountain made this trip unforgettable.

In this episode we had to wake up early in the night. We hiked up Table Mountain to do a highline in the sunrise with the amazing scenery of cape Town.

  4. Based off conversations William Least Heat-Moon had on the road in his book 'Blue Highways: A Journey into America.' This film represents my journey of lonely miles through small towns and empty highways.

In late 2015 I went on a 5,000mile road trip through the bottom half of the US from California to Louisiana and back. Driving through back-road highways, much like the Least Heat-Moon, I avoided the Interstate Highways as much as I could. It is off these Interstate highways where you can still find remnants of America as it used to be, maybe back when the author drove through it in the late 70's. Over the course of my journey whilst reading 'Blue Highways' I found my experiences on the road mirrored that of the author and though it was written in 1978, still held true to my journey in 2015.
