Perspectives on Portraiture

Garden City is a video poem drawing on documentary, psychogeography and landscape art. It focuses on the suburban town Welwyn Garden City in the commuter belt of London and an anarchist musician; Mark Astronaut, who has lived there for most of his life. The leafy idealism of Ebenezer Howard's Garden City concept led directly to the practice of town planning as championed by Lewis Mumford and Colin Ward amongst others. Mark reflects on some of the problems with this utopia turned suburbia as his music reverberates through the landscape.

Garden City was made by Gary McQuiggin as part of the BFI's DocNext Video Art Bursary Scheme.

Shot solely using 16mm, giving the content a sense of timelessness and aiding the film's surreal ambiance, this film from San Francisco State University student Jamie Oliveira poetically portrays how a shift in perception can change how you experience reality in the midst of an existential crisis.
