Featuring video excerpts of Oversized Dogs, a feature film documentary about China's 35 cm dog rule--and the people who break it.

China is famous for its bizarre treatment of dogs. Dogs are painted as pandas and tigers; dogs are rented at zoos; dogs are even served with a light soy sauce and side of bok choy. They are farm animals, meat, and pets — like so many issues in China, a mishmash of the practical and peculiar.

The Chinese governance of pet ownership is also idiosyncratic. Due to a 1993 ordinance banning dogs over 35 cm tall from urban areas, large dogs are effectively illegal in cities like Beijing and Shanghai. While the streets of Beijing overflow with yapping Chow Chows and Pekinese, there is not a single Labrador to be found.

Not in the daylight, anyway.

Chinese dog lovers stubbornly undermine the CCP's 35 cm "oversized dog" ban, quietly uniting in secret dog societies across Beijing.

Focusing on the humorous aspects of Chinese dissent — more akin to stubbornness than revolutionary zeal — Oversized Dogs explores the civil liberties and animal rights that surround the increasing number of Chinese citizens who illegally own large dogs within the context of a growing culture of pet ownership in China.

As this film is in production, the filmmakers are currently obscuring their identities until filming is complete.
