1. (2006)* 2:59 mins. excerpt. DV, color. Eight-screen installation commissioned by the Skirball Cultural Center. This installation shows how heritage is transmitted to family and community. We created a four-screen program that was duplicated to fill eight screens that encircle an octagonal room; this sample shows four screens. The museum wanted viewers to be able to enter the installation at anytime and understand what it was about so we created short segments with interstitials to reprise the themes. Because of the 360-degree configuration, as the editor, I was especially concerned with finding coherence between the screens and not overwhelming viewers by the multiple screens while taking full advantage of the possibilities granted by this format. In this sample, I show the first sequence, featuring Sophiline Cheam Shapiro, a Cambodian classical dancer, who teaches this art form, nearly lost under Pol Pot, to the Long Beach community. (Complete installation, TRT 14:25 mins.)
