Cultivating the Fine Art of Selfishness: Improving Community by Empowering Individuals is a book I wrote, that will be published this October by Advantage Media. As a doctor, I have seen way too many people, including my own family members, focus on helping others before caring for their own needs.

This is not only counterproductive, but harmful to one's health, work, relationships, finances, and overall well being. My mission is to create a newfound awareness of what it means to be selfish, and reframe it in a positive light. In doing so, we will be able to not only make people healthier and more balanced, but better able to positively improve community.

In 2010, I suddenly lost my father. This event was life changing. However, I realize I am not special as loss happens to all of us at some point in our lives. But, rather than go about my daily routine after the funeral, service, and grieving process, I chose to recognize the opportunity this horrific incident provided to evaluate the big picture.

Would I choose to heed the signs that so many others like my dad provided -- putting off plans, priorities, and aspirations -- either to be altruistic, selfless, and giving? Or would I rather seize each and every moment like it may be my last. What would you do? What are you doing now?

We must, as a group, counteract the destructive message that big media, government institutions such as the public school system, and religious organizations send. The only way to positively and sustainably impact those in your community, whether local or global, is to help yourself first.

Then, you will be in a much better position to reap the fruits of your labor, as well as the fulfillment that comes from being of service to others. Do not serve others or be a slave to the needs of others, but be of service to them. In that way, the focus will still be on you.

I hope you will help me spread this message, and more importantly incorporate the tools I will be teaching to be more productive and successful in attaining selfish habits, selfish work, selfish health, and selfish wealth. In Video 2, I discuss 3 powerful catalysts for change in your Selfish Work, excerpted from my book Cultivating the Fine Art of Selfishness: Improving Community by Empowering Individuals, due out in bookstores this October. These 3 catalysts are:

    1. Creating a healthy environment

    2. Removing negative influences in your life

    3. Surrounding yourself with positive people, including networks and support groups.

If you haven’t already read my description from Video 1, I have included it here, so you understand my story better.

In Video 3, I discuss one hugely overlooked foundation to your health – where you live. This is a brief summary from my chapter on Selfish Location found in Cultivating the Fine Art of Selfishness: Improving Community by Empowering Individuals, due out in bookstores this October. This isn’t discussed nearly enough, and after getting pets out of the bedroom, I don’t think anything raises as much emotion as the excuses I hear for why one MUST be living in a certain place.
