    Where did these instructions come from?

    II. “The Design” {vv. 3-6}
    What does it mean to be “sanctified”?
    to be holy; to be set apart exclusively for a certain purpose or use

    What is God’s will concerning sexual relationships?
    “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.” Genesis 2:24 NIV `84
    - a relationship between a married man and woman
    “4 ‘Haven’t you read,’ He replied, ‘that at the beginning the Creator made them male and female, 5 and said “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they two will become one flesh”? 6 So they are no longer two, but one.     What makes sexual sin so damaging?
    it is a sin against our body and soul

    If we reject this teaching, what does Paul say we are really doing?
    “he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God”; we are REJECTING GOD

    “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” I John 1:9 NIV `84

    I. “Nothing in common” {vv. 6:14-16a}
    What is the command?
    “do not be yoked together with unbelievers”

    What does it mean to be “yoked”?
    a union or partnership that affects who you are and your lifestyle/ choices
    “harmony” –playing in tune with a common standard and reading from the same score

    Why is this important?
    because a believer’s and an unbeliever’s goals, god, and directions are not in agreement
    “19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.” John 3: 19-21 NIV `84

    “If we claim to have fellowship with Him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.” I John 1:6 NIV `84

    II. “Everything in common” {vv. 6:16b-18}
    What makes believers different from unbelievers?
    we belong to God; He lives and walks among us in an intimate relationship

    What does God command us to do?
    to separate ourselves from unbelievers and not to corrupt ourselves with anything “unclean” – anything in opposition to God’s will

    What does God promise to do?
    He will “receive” us; He “will be a Father to” us and He will make us His “sons and daughters”

    III. “No longer common” {v. 7:1}
    Because of God’s promises, we are commanded to do what?
    “purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God”

    What does this look like?
    I live with God as my focus, loving Him with all my heart, obeying Him in ALL my decisions and actions, and loving those around me unconditionally

    The world won’t know God is a Redeemer if we are not living like redeemed people. Dr. Scott Hafemann
