In July 2011, Remote Control Productions came to MIM to record samples of several instruments in our collection for use in film scores. Among them was our famous Octobasse, as played by renowned double bassist and teacher Nico Abondolo. Nico was gracious enough to allow us to film him getting familiar with the instrument before the recording session started, and to share his observations about this unique piece of music history.
The samples from this recording session can be heard on James Newton Howard's score for "The Hunger Games". For best results, turn up your subs!

Please join us every third Saturday of the month from 10:30 a.m. to noon to play Balinese gamelan instruments. Groups of ten to twenty will learn about the culture and music of Bali, along with the instruments themselves in this gamelan workshop.
This is both a great team-building exercise, while also being individually rewarding.
