In 2004, Tree House Books’ story began. We began out of conversation and listening when a study was done on the Susquehanna Avenue Commercial Corridor. Ya see, we’re on the 1400 block of Susquehanna Avenue–sandwiched among dollar stores and corner stores protected by bullet-proof glass. We are a non-profit, “community center disguised as a bookstore” whose mission is to grow and sustain a community of readers, writers, and thinkers in North Central Philadelphia, an area where 32% of the population is under 18 and there’s only one library.

When members of a community realize that their stories are important, neighborhoods heal themselves. Here we will archive those stories. Our community, our neighbors, our friends, our children–for North Central Philadelphia there’s an urgency in having these stories told.

Through the various exchanges you see on this channel, we hope to create the foundation for a new community culture where the voices that make up the neighborhood are the ones that heal it. Our project intends to intertwine the stories that are being forgotten with the stories that have yet to be heard.
